Breathe

breathe

2016 · Team of 4 (2 programmers, 2 designers)

A relaxing casual 2D game built as a breathing-regulation aid, designed with patients in mind rather than as a conventional score-chasing arcade title. The player guides drifting creatures around a calm, circular arena whose pulsing rings set the tempo — the game paces the player instead of the player racing the game. Presented alongside a teammate as the module’s capstone deliverable.

Role and responsibilities

  • Programmer — one of two on the team; the other two members handled design and art
  • Co-presented the project for assessment (recording below)

Learning outcomes

  • Designing toward a therapeutic goal rather than for engagement — pacing, difficulty, and feedback all had to stay calm by construction
  • Building a complete 2D game loop end to end: spawning, movement, scoring, pause/resume state
  • Working inside a mixed programmer/designer team and splitting ownership cleanly
